Today, families are not together as often as in the past. The industrial revolution and the information age have affected the way we think. When families had farms or trades, life was different. Families worked, lived and learned together. This is the lifestyle context for the instruction:

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9, NIV (see also Deuteronomy 11:18-20.)

In our modern society, people specialize. Mom and dad make the money and keep the house, school teachers educate, youth pastors spiritualize and children focus on academics, entertainment and talents. We need to consider how we can live in the modern world and still heed Deuteronomy’s instruction for parents to be fully responsible to “Teach them to your children”. We must be intentional, and lifestyle changes may be needed to help facilitate Deuteronomy’s instructions.

In the passage above, Moses was saying that parents should communicate God’s ways to their children whenever possible, wherever possible. Parents were to wear the message, inscribe it on their house and gate, and talk about it when sitting, lying down, or walking. When God said that parents and grandparents were to teach children while doing things they did every day, he was suggesting that teaching took time. Parents were to stop and explain why God wanted them to be loving or truthful in a specific situation or to explain again why something was wrong when a child couldn’t see it that way.

This command was not for a priest or teacher, but for parents and grandparents, and the teaching was to continue for generations to come.
